If you ever have a problem that you aren’t making progress on, baking something is a nice break. The steps aren’t complicated, but you do need to pay attention. That takes your mind off of the worry for a little while. And sometimes you may find that while you were busy measuring and mixing and tasting and cleaning, the solution to your problem appeared in the back of your mind. And if not, well, at least you have something to nosh on while you work it out.
Of course, you don’t need to save baking for only those occasions when you’re worrying. Baking is an everyday thing if you want it to be. From biscuits for breakfast and bread for sandwiches to sweet treats, desserts, and fun birthday cakes, a few common ingredients makes it all possible. It’s also a kitchen activity that the whole family can participate in. Little ones can bring ingredients, older kids can stir, someone can finish the prep while another starts cleaning. And then everybody can enjoy the results.
February is National Bake for Family Fun Month, so get in there and whip up some bread, or muffins, or a pizza, or a casserole. Even a potato counts. And you know what pairs with all of those? Coffee! We’d suggest a baking mug.
1. Punch it Down
Kneading dough is a great way to work out aggression. It’s like a stress ball you can eat.
2. Proof (not just for dough)
Again, it’s not hard to bake, it just takes time. Some people are worth the investment. Show them.
3. Recipe for Success
Once you’ve got the basics down, it’s fun to experiment with more complicated recipes.
4. Take Whisks
A lot of baking is just learning what to look for. How fluffy does this mix need to be? When should I stop kneading? When does it come out of the oven? Practice.
5. The Secret Ingredient
See #2 above. You get extra big thanks if you make someone’s favorite treat.
