Flight is probably the oldest dream of mankind. From the tale of Icarus to the first comics appearance of Superman, we’ve all wanted to soar into the sky. North Carolina proudly stamps “First in Flight” on our license plates. It doesn’t matter that the Wright brothers were from Ohio; it was our beach and we’re claiming it.
The first flight was in 1903. In 1947, Chuck Yeager broke the sound barrier in the Bell X-1, and our military aircraft have only gotten faster, better armed, and more maneuverable since then. If you’ve never been to a military air show, they are amazing spectacles of precision engineering and spectacular flying.
Originally part of the Army, the U.S. Air Force was formally established as a separate uniformed branch of the military in 1947, making it the youngest of the branches. It rapidly became the largest and most technologically advanced air force in the world.
Memorial Day is May 28. If you have a friend or family member in the service, we have a collection of Air Force mugs that make great Thank You gifts.
1. Don’t Look Now
One of the Air Force’s core missions is global integrated ISR (intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance). Between the jets, drones, satellites, and other aircraft, they don’t get surprised often.
2. Going… Up!
When the Wright brothers first left the ground at Kill Devil Hills, it began the exploration of the last frontier, up to and beyond Earth’s atmosphere. Reality rapidly caught up to the science fiction stories of the 30s and 40s.
3. Yes Sir! Uh… Ma’am!
I have it on good authority that while certain commanders may be pushovers, none of their wives are.
4. Oh the Places You’ll Go
None of the stories I’ve heard from family members in the Air Force can be repeated in polite company, but even if only a third of them are true, this definition is on the spot.
5. Defending the Defenders
I know enough military spouses to confidently state that they are as tough and dedicated as any serving soldier. They really should have their own day of celebration.
