In 1950, Robert Newton played Long John Silver in the Disney movie Treasure Island. He based his dialog on the dialect of West Country in southwestern England—where both he and the character were from—and permanently shaped our pop cultural idea of pirate speech. So much so that in 1995, two guys from Oregon decided it should be celebrated as an annual holiday.

September 19 is International Talk Like A Pirate Day, because International Talk Like That One Guy From That One Movie Day is way too long to say. And not nearly as much fun. So if ye’ve a mind t’ treat yerself to some loot, cast yer eyes on these pirate mugs!
