If you want a TV network to buy your procedural, it needs to be one of three things: a doctor show, a lawyer show, or a cop show. That last one is the most popular by far. From street level patrols to undercover operations, detectives (public and private) to crime scene technicians. City, county, or federal, it seems there’s always a new aspect of the law enforcement community to explore.
It’s such a flexible genre, too. How are investigations carried out in the military? How would these detectives react to the supernatural? What would happen if these two very different officers became partners?
In reality, of course, it’s not quite as exciting. No dramatic reveals, very few high-speed chases, and most investigations take longer than 42 minutes with commercial breaks. That doesn’t mean it’s not important.
January 9 is National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day, so thank the men and women that keep our communities safe. In our admittedly biased opinion, a police mug makes a great gift!
1. In Praise of Idiots
If people were smart, they wouldn’t be criminals in the first place.
2. Yes, Officer
The police just want to restore the peace as quickly as possible. They are peace keepers, after all. It helps to follow their instructions.
3. They’re People, Too
It’s easy to lump them all into a faceless horde, but they’re your neighbors, with family and friends.
The teen years are when most people meet cops in their official capacity. Hopefully, they learn from that experience.
5. The Right to Remain Stationary
Few professions earn their retirement as much as those that put themselves in harm’s way every work day.
