Countdown to Christmas: 40

You’re probably breaking the law right now. Every year, hundreds of thousands of bills are introduced in state and federal legislatures. Obviously, they don’t all get enacted, but even so, it’s impossible to keep up with all of the changes. And every state has those weird laws still on the books, such as it being illegal to use profanity while driving in Maryland, or having to be 18 to play pinball in South Carolina. I, personally, have broken both of those laws, and I don’t even travel all that much.

Obscure prohibitions aside, at some point in your life, you’ll probably need an attorney. Starting a business? Taxes and licensing. Creating media? Copyright. Getting divorced? Family law. Writing a will? Estate planning. Hopefully, these will be the only times you need someone with “Esq.” after their name, but as we all know, some people aren’t very reasonable, and you may end up as the plaintiff or defendant in a more serious matter.
