My family is Irish—our ancestors were from County Cork—so when we got the chance to visit Ireland in the late 80s, we jumped at the chance. As a 16-year-old, I was less than patient with the James Joyce tour, but I did enjoy going through Limerick (my favorite form of poetry), and I kissed the Blarney Stone to help me woo women (results are debatable). Being a big Medieval Fantasy fan, I thoroughly geeked out over the different castles, and I was struck by the realization of just how young the United States is as a country. As the old joke goes, people in the US think 200 years is a long time, while people in the UK think 200 miles is a long drive.

I hope to get back to Ireland one day and see it through older eyes. I think I’d have a deeper appreciation of the history, even James Joyce. Until then, we have St. Patrick’s Day celebrations, where everyone can be Irish for a day! Check out these fun St. Patrick’s Day mugs!
