The first record of a North American grapevine comes from 1584, in journal entries by Philip Amadas and Arthur Barlowe, who were the first explorers sent to the New World by Sir Walter Raleigh. Upon landing on Roanoke Island off the coast of North Carolina, they declared the land to be bountiful with grapes, as a single root system covered dozens of acres. This plant came to be known as the Mothervine.
Almost 250 years later, in 1823, Thomas Jefferson wrote about how much he enjoyed bottles of “Mother Vineyard Muscadine,” from that very same Mothervine, declaring them to be every bit as good (and sometimes better) than the European wines.
It is almost 200 years after Jefferson’s writings, and that same Mothervine is still being harvested. As you would expect, it holds the title of America’s Oldest Cultivated Grapevine.
May 25 is National Wine Day, so if you have plans to celebrate—or already do—check out these wine mugs!
1. Sounds Good!
Getting everyone together to enjoy some wine, with dinner or just by itself, lets you show off your skills as host.
2. That Kind of Day
Instead of yelling at or punching people who really deserve it, take a deep breath, enjoy your beverage, and try to smile.
They can’t object to drinking in the office if they don’t see the bottles, right?
4. Look at the Time
It’s easy to lose track when you’re enjoying time with friends.
Because drinking alone is no fun.
Everybody needs a short break from tension and everyday problems.
7. It’s 7:00 Somewhere
I don’t actually know when people like to drink wine; seven seemed reasonable.
Maybe you found a new vintage to try, or maybe you have an achievement to toast.
9. Punching the Clock
It’s important to keep your work stuff out of your home stuff. And vice versa.
10. Secret Identity?
No one is defined by any one thing. Other professions are available in this design.
