Around the mid-1860s, engineers and inventors in various European countries independently decided that, while the velocipede (bicycle) was fun and all, what we really needed was more speed. The next thirty-odd years saw dozens of designs and prototypes, but only a few of those companies still exist. Peugeot Motocycles displayed their first motorcycle in 1898. Indian introduced their prototype in 1901, Triumph built their first cycle in 1902, and Harley-Davidson began in 1903.
World Wars 1 and 2 saw many improvements and standards in motorcycles as foot and horse messengers and scouts were replaced. Today, companies continue to innovate, and many different types of bikes are available, such as Dual Sport, Cruiser, or Touring.
