Sewing is one of those skills that seems to have fallen by the wayside. Inexpensive clothing is so easy to get, few people take the time to learn how to do repairs. Any parent will tell you, though, it is so much easier to let out pants hems rather than have to buy an entire new wardrobe because the kid had a growth spurt.
When I got my first sewing machine, it was a cheapie entry model. My first thought after using it was: “Why have I been doing this by hand?!” My second thought was: “I need more power.” Shortly afterwards, I upgraded to a heavy duty model, able to handle multiple layers of denim, canvas, and leather. It has 30 stitch presets, but I only use, like, four of them. I do have a ridiculous number of feet, though. It seems that whatever join or decorative pattern you want to create, someone has made a specialty foot that handles it. The buttonhole foot in particular is a lifesaver.
