Geek, nerd, dweeb, dork… a lot of us have been called these (and worse) growing up. Maybe you enjoyed comics, role playing games, science fiction and fantasy, or some other pop cultural phenomenon. Perhaps you had a talent for one of the hard sciences, or knew a lot about computers. You might have just been awkward and shy.
Teenagers aren’t generally known for their intellectual capacities, but during those years between 12 and 18, they get extremely anti-intellectual. If your high school was like mine, the jocks were at the top of the social ladder, the cheerleaders next, then the pretty people in general.
The mid-1980s saw the start of “nerds” reclaiming the term as a badge of pride. Ten years later, the Geek Squad became the go-to group for fixing computer issues. And we all know what happened to Bill Gates and Steve Jobs’ computer companies.
