I always look forward to September because it marks the arrival of autumn, and the end of 90-degree/85% humidity days. After spending four or five months indoors with air conditioning, it’s nice to be able to go outside without immediately being soaked in sweat.
For a lot of families in my region, September is the month we start getting the house ready for winter. We open the doors and windows to air the place out, put clean filters on our HVAC system, get the thicker blankets out of storage, and make sure everyone’s heavier coats still fit. Folks with gardens start canning tomatoes, pears, apples, corn, cucumbers, and more to make sure the pantry stays full until spring.
In addition to anticipating better weather and changing leaves, here are some other special days in September!
1. September 1 - Chess Day
The longest possible game of chess requires 5949 moves. By contrast, the shortest checkmate can be achieved in four moves.
2. September 6 - Read a Book Day
Are you one of those people that has a stack of books next to the bed?
3. September 12 - Day of the Programmer
And if you prefer your books to be digital, thank a programmer.
4. September 19 - International Talk Like a Pirate Day
For no other reason than it’s fun.
5. September 25 - World Pharmacist Day
We can all have a better quality of life thanks to these professionals.
6. September 28 - International Rabbit Day
They get overshadowed by cats and dogs, but rabbits are an extremely popular pet.
7. National Sewing Month
If you have very particular requirements for curtains, tablecloths, clothes, or handbags, it’s cheaper to make them yourself.
Do you have other days to celebrate in September? We probably have mugs for them! You can do a topic search from our Home Page. Remember, too, that U.S. orders of two or more mugs get free shipping!
