My family has always owned dogs. Sometimes one of us would get a purebred, but more often than not, we had mutts. When people asked what breed they were, we’d tell them “It’s a mischenhund,” which is German for “mixed dog.” There’s something nostalgic about mutts; scrappy little mixed-breed terriers running through a field with their boy, or face-licking mongrels that want to lie in your lap even after they’re way too big. They may never win any ribbons at the fancy dog show, but that’s okay, because they’re still part of the family.
